Mark – February 22nd

I have never been more aware of how lucky I am to be married to someone I enjoy living with.

Mark doesn’t love sitting for a portrait – it is boring, he gets fidgety and I get snappy. Yes fun times!

I have yet to capture his great, congenial spirit and ever-present humor, but I do love the details in this. They surprise me after the event – the colors, the mark-making. I have made peace (mostly) with the fact that, in many ways, I don’t know what I am doing. I don’t have a solid, academic-style training, which permits an assured, anatomically correct, strong likeness to be built up quickly. I thrash around in the dark a bit! But sometimes it is that blindfolded way-finding that creates something that surprises me – and yes it is usually in the details.

To ease his boredom, Mark kept surreptitiously filming the process with his iPad. He had it in his lap and I never knew when it was on. Seeing the little clips intrigued me – and I admit to being relieved to see that I looked a lot during the process.

He got a lot of attention on the 22nd, even when it was getting very dark and I couldn’t see that well. He finally keeled over around midnight – it is a tough life being a muse!
