I love what happens to the landscape at night, whether it is due to artificial or natural illumination. I love the drama and theatricality, but I haven’t painted it very much. I think it intimidates me. It also interrupts a certain comfy, domestic rhythm and risks making me cranky! So, more often than not, I admire the effects and utter the defeatist statement, “I should be painting this…”
Well, I’m glad I occasionally break the pattern.
I started the painting below on May 15th – the same day I painted the thunderstorm (see Storm). I lived with it for a few weeks and then decided to revisit it on June 7th – also painting a small composition of the same scene.
The next image is almost too dark to read properly. Mark took it, as he did all the others of me working. It emphasizes the problems of trying to paint at night. He then fell asleep and it was my turn to capture him!
