Self Portrait, February 8th

Some days are just too wet, too cold and too dreary. I had the feeling I should paint, but every time I looked outside vacuuming or cleaning the toilet seemed a better alternative. The compromise was to do a self portrait…

It was mid afternoon. I chose the spare room as it has a side window but, as it was quite dark, I supplemented that with a lamp. Things did not start off well. Mark’s photo below, taken after about twenty minutes, strategically misses off most of the painting because, as he so kindly explained later, “it wasn’t looking too good”!

I am pleased to report that he came around to the final painting.

My favorite bits are the marks and colors that appear to have independently made their way in without my knowledge or cooperation. I posted the image directly to my Instagram site and it received the most “likes” to date.

  1. I’m with Colin. This definitely has an El Greco aspect to it. Happily it’s not Lucien Freud that comes to mind.
